Less Under the Tree…

Gentry Christmas 2008This year, our family has made the decision to have less under our tree so that we may help others enjoy a Christmas filled with joy and the peace that only God’s love can provide.  He who has the most toys DOES NOT win.

Christmas isn’t about how many gifts are under the tree.  It’s about family.  And most importantly, it’s about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior.

This has been tough for my mom to grasp.  Not in a bad way; she’s wonderfully generous.  But in past years, opening gifts has been an all-day affair for our family.  There are a ton of gifts, but we alsoreally take our time.  So as we’ve discussed our revised Christmas plan, she’s been concerned about how we’ll spend the day.  For me, this is a great opportunity for our family to create some new traditions that don’t revolve around presents.

This year, how are YOU going to celebrate the season?

  2. I love this post! You hit the nail on the head! We are giving a lot this year too :) We have also decided that since this is Isabella’s (pretty much) first Christmas…she is only going to receive 4 gifts every year. That is PLENTY and I don’t want her to expect a lot of presents since that is not the meaning at all of Christmas!

I hope you have a amazing and joyful holiday :)

  4. Thanks! Dave Ramsey likes to say “It’s time to change your family tree!” And that’s what I’m hoping to do. My kids are too young to know what they’re “missing” – an absurd amount of presents under the tree. Our house is already overflowing with toys! We don’t need; but there are plenty of people who DO need…basic necessities that we take for granted.

I want to teach Callie and Sadie how fun it is to give generously. Callie is 3 1/2 and she has decided to use some of her allowance (“commission” for cleaning her playroom) to buy a gift for a 3 year old girl from a family we adopted for Christmas. I almost cried when she said she wanted to do it!

Merry Christmas, Tara! Thanks for the comment! :-)

  6. This season is definitely all about celebrating the birth of Jesus. Not about presents. We plan to focus on family time and creating priceless memories. I’m beginning to tell my just turned two year old the true meaning of Christmas by fun crafts and activities. We are having such a great time.

  8. Thanks, Mommy Bear! I’m trying to come up with some activities that my whole extended family can enjoy (including my 34 year old brother and dad). My mom is concerned that the boys will end up in the den watching football and the girls will be in the kitchen. Any ideas???
